Mark Beehre initially trained as a specialist physician, working for several years in medical practice before studying photography at the Elam School of Fine Arts in Auckland and Massey University in Wellington. He graduated with a BFA in 2004 and went on to complete an MFA in 2014. His work has been exhibited in New Zealand and overseas. Mark is experienced in working across a range of photographic genres and has particular expertise in environmental portraiture, photographing people at ease in their own homes or other settings that are meaningful to them. Mark is the co-proprietor of Courtenay Studios, offering a broad range of photographic services. As well as working on a number of projects for exhibition and publication, he is available for a variety of commissioned work.
Mark is the author of Men Alone—Men Together, a significant work combining oral history and photographic portraiture in documenting the lives of some 45 gay men and recounting how their journeys have, for the moment, led them towards or away from relationship with another. Men Alone—Men Together is available from the publisher, from Mark himself, and from bookshops around the country.
Mark is currently working on a new book, A Queer Existence, recording the life experiences of gay men born since the Homosexual Law Reform Act was passed in 1986.
